Party it up while we’re still here…

This may be the only video of Develle performing one of his original songs, “Lost in a Can of Coors Light.” Thanks to Kalie Seltvedt for passing it along.
Miss you so much, Develle.

So glad to see Herbie Hancock (and jazz for that matter) get his due last night by earning the Grammy for Album of the Year. What was even better was his subtle shout-out to Barack with his comment that, “The impossible is becoming possible. YES WE CAN!”
And how hot was the Alicia Keys/John Mayer collab. Whoooo. She needs to release that version of the song.
I’m upset that I missed Kanye’s performance. Guess I’ll catch it on Youtube. I’m also late to the Amy Winehouse party, but I’m diggin her. She definitely doesn’t fit the mold of most of the crap out today.
Overall, I was loving the Grammys last night. Live, real music is making a comeback. Finally.

Turns out the hard drive was bad. It died last night, despite a valliant week-long effort to survive. I’m picking up a new one after work, so hopefully tonight, I can be installed, restored, updated and ready to go. I have a ton of literally mission-critical work to get done ASAP, so I might not do the Linux thing for now. I just have too much to learn to get going efficiently and quickly. Enough nerd talk.
So the John Mayer show was a blast! It was at the Ford Amphitheater in Tampa, and we had lawn seats. We got there pretty early and staked out an outstanding little piece of grass right up against the front fence, so we had nothing obstructing our view. The sound was great. The only drawback was the weather. It was blazing hot and humid until the sun started to set, and then the skies opened up in a huge thunderstorm. We really had nowhere to go, so Lauren and I tucked our blanket under us and huddled under a rain poncho. The storm lasted through the last half of Ben Folds’ set and through the intermission, and cleared up just before John’s show.
The show itself was great. I was disappointed that he didn’t do a couple of my favorite songs, but the ones he did choose were wonderful. He played a 3-song encore, which is rare. All in all a wonderful show. I hope to see JM many more times in his career. Maybe he’ll be to me like my mom is with Dan Fogelberg.
Anyway, we got to Keith’s house at about 1 AM, stayed up talking for a bit, and got a little bit of sleep. We left Tampa the next morning at 7:10 and headed back to Gainesville.
Gotta get to work… more later.

I bought four tickets yesterday to John Mayer’s August 7th show in Tampa. This will be my second time seeing the Continuum tour. Three girlfriends and I are going to road trip down in a minivan. LOL Can’t wait!
P.S. I saved another worm today.
An important message

Here’s a pretty good review of the John Mayer concert in Orlando Saturday night.
The set list was as follows:
Vultures
Good Love is On the Way
Why Georgia
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room
Clarity
The Heart of Life
Belief
Neon
Gravity
Waiting on the World to Change
No Such Thing
– encore –
Message in a Bottle
Your Body is a Wonderland
Bigger Than My Body
In Repair
For me, the only disappointment of the entire evening was that he didn’t play “Comfortable.” I wasn’t even all that upset that he didn’t play “Daughters.” In a Randy-Jackson-esque sense, that song’s just kind of okay for me.
Come to think of it, “Stop This Train” and “Man on the Side” would have been cool too, but that’s what Bittorent and bootlegged concert mp3s of other tour stops are for.
I’ve been a John Mayer fan for a few years now. At first I kind of ignored him, thinking he was just a prettyboy pop star with little substance. Then I saw the “Any Given Thursday” live DVD and was hooked. John Mayer may be the only artist of my generation I can honestly see being around in 30 years. He’s got the total package — musicianship (the boy can PLAY), a signature vocal sound that, while obviously patterned after SRV, is only improving… and I think most importantly a genius songwriting ability. I read an article somewhere that said John Mayer may be developing into a spokesman and voice for our generation, much like Bob Dylan, James Brown, or Joni Mitchell were for theirs. I’m beginning to believe that’s true. John’s songs seem to say the things I’m unable to articulate in a given moment, and they do it in such a way that I just want to close my eyes and enjoy the ride.
John, thank you for a wonderful evening in Orlando. I hope to be a fan for many years to come.
On a side note, check out John Mayer’s blog sometime. It’s sharp, witty, and incredibly entertaining.
Old friends
May 31st
Last night was the bomb. My all time favorite hip hop artist and friend, Pigeon John was in town at Common Grounds. I hadn’t seen him since 2000, and Mike had never met him or seen him perform, so I was excited beyond belief.
My friend John came with us. This is him being mad. Maybe it’s because he’s Canadian and they all go to bed early or something.
This was supposedly a Blue Hawaiian. The bartender had never made one before and it came out decidedly seafoam green.
Notice, Mike’s was much bluer. Hmph.
Pigeon’s set was better than the headliner, by far. Made me miss “the scene” and the countless PJ/LA Symphony shows I watched when I was in college. I danced, laughed, and laughed some more. He did classics like “Be” and some newer stuff too. I was glad that Mike and Pigeon got to talk music and such. Hopefully they’ll get a chance to work together soon.
You know, I do miss hip hop. Pigeon wasn’t the only “old friend” it was good to see again.

Wow.
Barry Manilow has the top album in the country?
Something is wrong with the world. Mariah Carey is winning Grammys. Barry Manilow is at the top of the charts. (Who is buying these albums???) The good news is that Barack Obama won a Grammy though. Heh.
Speaking of music, I’ve already picked out my American Idol favorites this season. I successfully predicted last season’s winner, so maybe I’ll do it again. I like Paris, and that white guy with grey hair who sings like a mixture of Michael McDonald and Joe Cocker.
