Dear Gov. Crist:
I am a registered Democrat, but I voted for you in your bid for Governor of Florida. I did so because you seemed like a decent, fair-minded individual who would do what was best for all of the citizens of our state. Recently, I have been very disappointed at some of the decisions and statements you have made regarding the primary process.
First, I was greatly dismayed at the decision of the Republicans in the State Legislature to move the Florida primary. You did this, fully knowing the consequences. Unfortunately, those consequences harmed the Democratic voters disproportionately.
Following Party rules, the Democratic candidates mutually agreed not to campaign in our state, and that, presumably, the votes “wouldn’t count.” It is deplorable and immoral that the state legislature decided to disenfranchise thousands of voters by breaking rules. Let’s be clear: it was the decision of the Florida Legislature that disenfranchised voters, not the Democratic National Committee.
Now, strangely, you are expressing a desire to have the delegates seated as-is, citing your apparently newfound conviction that the voters’ “voices should be heard.” Gov. Crist, you should be desirous that ALL Floridians voices be heard. A primary that was held in a state where no campaigning took place, and where thousands of Democratic voters stayed home because of your party’s decision is not fair. It is not an example of “voices being heard.” It is lop-sided, unfair, and unjust. Florida’s primary was by all accounts uncontested, and as such, should not play a part in swaying this election. To be clear, the Republican leaders of Florida should not be allowed to choose our Democratic nominee for us.
Sir, to be fair to your constituents, either authorize (and fund) a new caucus or primary, or let things stand as they are. The last thing this nation (and state) need is the reputation for crooked, unfair, under the table “politics” deciding our candidates and President for us.
Sincerely,
[My Name]
